Conor McGregor is arguably the biggest name in MMA today, with many debates about GOAT status including his name. His seemingly comfortable UFC205 win over Eddie Alvarez via second round knockout earned him a place in the history books as the first fighter ever to hold two concurrent UFC world title belts. What’s next for the young superstar is a question on everyone’s lips, with many rumours circulating about a possible superfight against one of the greatest boxers alive today. Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather!
The now retired Floyd Mayweather Jr has a perfect record of 49 wins and no loses. Earning a reported 230 million for his fight against Manny Pacquiao, he’s considered the richest sports star on the planet. What could motivate Mayweather to lace up the gloves again? It seems the answer is even more money! A fight of this magnitude could very likely command a gate higher than any before in the world of combat sports. With boxing and MMA fans the world over tuning in to watch, the pay-per-view figures would be through the roof.
The logic of such a fight is questionable, an mma fight would certainly be tipped heavily in McGregor’s favour, whereas a boxing match would almost definitely be a win for Mayweather. It seems that if the fight is to take place it will be in the Octagon, as McGregor is still under contract with the UFC, but it will probably be a boxing only contest.
Whatever happens, the buildup and on-going spat between the two has been major entertainment in itself and also huge promotion if such a fight were to take place. Having begun over a year ago McGregor in typical self-assured fashion claimed he would make short work of the boxing legend: “If you put me face-to-face with Floyd Mayweather—pound-for-pound boxing’s best. It would take me less than thirty seconds to wrap around him like a boa constrictor and strangle him.” Mayweather first dismissed the statement as a publicity stunt saying; “I don’t take that dude seriously. He’s just trying to get himself some publicity.” Now Mayweather has gone full circle saying he “absolutely” thinks the fight will happen and that it’ll be a “tough fight”.
Pundits first laughed at any possibility of such a fight taking place but now the idea is really gaining traction, with some big names like UFC president Dana White weighing in on such a fight taking place; White recently stating:
“Conor McGregor…if he touches you, you go to sleep,” he said. “Floyd puts people to sleep too, with his fighting style, not with his hands. … Floyd can say what he wants about Conor, but even other fighters have to respect him. He’s special. Floyd’s never even come close to doing to other fighters what Conor does.” Even Eddie Alvarez’s striking coach Mark Henry said after Alverez’s knockout at the hands of McGregor, that the fight could go to Mcgregor: “Before this fight, I would highly doubt him fighting Mayweather, but I think this dude can take out Mayweather. I’m not even joking.”
With both fighters eager to make the biggest payday of their lives become a reality, and both having such power and influence in the fighting world it seems like it’s not a question of will it happen but rather when it will happen. So, who’s your money on? Let us know in the comments.
