Ip man 3 was a long time in the making, and had a lot to live up to considering the awesomeness of the first two films. Did it fill my expectations? Not quite, now I am not saying this is a crap movie, no way am I saying that. What I am implying is that it would be very difficult to match the first two movies and almost impossible to exceed them.
First of all I don’t want you to be confused with Ip man: the legend is born or Ip man: the final fight both these films came out after Ip man 2 but neither one of them star Donnie Yen also they are no where near as good as Donnie Yen’s Ip Man franchise. Legend is born comes close but I digress.
I will start off with what I didn’t like about the film, the group fight scenes – where Master Yip aka Ip Man (Donnie Yen) fights of multiple attackers was good but not great. I was really expecting something spectacular, like in the first two films were Ip man fights off multiple opponents with ease and grace and it really makes for quite a dazzling display of choreographed brilliance.
In this film it came across as kind of bland and generic but still much better than a lot of the fight scenes you see in big blockbuster movies using actors that don’t really practice martial arts. You know the ones I a talking about – lots of cut scenes, close ups and shaky camera scenes which leaves you feeling somewhat confused and slightly nauseated.
I was also a tad disappointed about the Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson duel, it was great but oh so short. It was something that was really promoted quite a bit so it could of at least gone on for a bit longer.
Now for what I did like, there was a fight between Ip Man and a Muay Thai fighter, I am not going to give it away too much but lets just say it was true to form of what you would expect from a Donnie Yen film. The final fight was also pretty spectacular but fell a bit short of what I saw in the previous two films.
And just like the first two films it had a very decent story line, you could watch it with your girlfriend and there would be enough teary eyed moments to keep her entertained, suspense to appeal to both of you and action scenes which complete/make the film.
All up I am going to say this is an awesome movie and well worth a watch, however I just had slightly higher expectations but maybe I am just being a bit too fussy. Let me know in the comment section below or by rating it via the bar below…
